REAL LIVES, REAL TIMES: A New Windmill Book of Non-Fiction. Edited by Sheila Hales. Heinemann pound;5.75.

This book consists of fascinating, approachable material designed to meet national curriculum requirements. There is a wide range of documents - accounts, letters, diaries, news reports under seven headings - to which a number of responses is possible. It offers different reading experiences, and there is scope for differentiation and careful construction to enable progression. So a key stage 3 gap is filled. Memo to publishers: what about similar selections for key stage 2?
