Some of us get lost in language even on a visit to a bookmaker’s, where a “yankee” doesn’t have a US passport or even an accent (it’s a bet).

The language generated by ICT can be even more esoteric or plain tedious, so you may want to invest in The Dictionary of ICT (Bloomsbury, pound;9.99), now in its fourth edition. It’s been edited and reworked by Stephen Gregory, a lecturer at York College, to increase relevance for pupils.
