Summer holidays sadly trigger a rise in arson attacks, not just on schools but also sports pavilions and other parks buildings, warns Zurich Municipal, a leading insurance company for local authorities.

Attacks cost local authorities pound;2.1 million in the first quarter of 2002, more than pound;1.7m for all of 2001.

“Arson attacks hit at the heart of communities. Sports facilities are taken out of action, the fear of crime in the area increases and the community can feel under attack,” says a spokeswoman.

The company recommends regular inspections, installing partitions in roof spaces, fire doors, intruder alarms and monitored CCTV.
