First allegiance

Margaret Maden and Philip Hunter may be right to suggest that there is room for nominees of local authorities or other community groups and many colleges are active in seeking good governors from these sources (TES, January 19).

They are surely wrong to suggest that such governors should "owe first allegiance to the outside body".
