It was with great interest that I read the item “War effort remembered”(October 22). With the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the First World War just over three years away, it seems logical that schools should play a role in commemorating this event.
Curriculum for Excellence is the perfect vehicle for giving pupils the opportunity to be involved in a wide range of learning experiences. This was the case in my last school in Airdrie, where we took pupils to visit the battlefields of the Great War.
We focused on visiting the graves of a small number of men who had left Airdrie to serve their country. This led us to share our knowledge of these sacrifices with the community in an evening of remembrance entitled “Airdrie Remembers”.
Pupils took charge of their learning outcomes and it benefited the community.
