We congratulate our FE Focus columnist this week. Tom Wilson, principal of Glasgow Metropolitan College, made it into the pages of the Daily Mail, an honour indeed. It was his other day job as chairman of Learning and Teaching Scotland, however, that earned him his appearance.

Following Gordon Brown’s “Britishness” speech, Wilson was prevailed on to comment and was quoted as saying that whether emotive calls to patriotism were appropriate in the classroom “is always worthy of examination”.

Somehow, this produced the headline: “Keep patriotism out of Scottish schools, says education chief”. A slip-up, we’re sure.
