AS A Year 6 teacher about to hand on my precious class to secondary colleagues, Dave Davison’s article depressed me greatly.

His description of pupils who have no motivation and struggle to use a pair of scissors bears no resemblance to my younger children. They have no trouble measuring and using saws accurately. More importantly, they delight in creating something from scratch.

The reason why home improvement TV programmes are so popular, and why people buy self-assembly kits from IKEA, is because adults - like children - delight in making things.

Something is going wrong somewhere, but it’s not the children who are the problem.
