Ross Martin, the New Labourite candidate for Falkirk West in the Scottish parliamentary elections, has paid the price for his ambitions. To wit, West Lothian’s education convener has sold his house in Mid Calder and is buying one in the constituency.
He found himself discussing his move at a meeting of the Scottish Joint Negotiating Committee with fellow education chair Val MacIver of Highland. “You live in Mid Calder, don’t you?” MacIver enquired. On receiving confirmation, she told a stunned Martin: “And you have a green carpet.”
Before imaginations run riot, we should explain that the buyer of Martin’s house is none other than MacIver’s niece. Who said Scottish education is a small world? And who said the SJNC discussed nothing of substance?
