First screened by the BBC 37 years ago,Jonathan Miller’s black and white film of Alice in Wonderland marked a breakthrough in the transformation of classic fiction into visual images. Imaginative teaching notes on the British Film Institute website offer many interesting approaches to use with KS3 pupils. Year 7 students might discuss the creation of the atmospheric opening or relate pictures to original text. Year 9 pupils might place the film within the culture of the 1960s or examine it as a reflection of the Victorian era - and there’s always the opportunity to choreograph the lobster quadrille.
