City of Edinburgh Council, in partnership with the Scottish Football Association and the Big Lottery Fund, has embarked on a pilot for a girls’ development league based at the Hearts Football Academy at Riccarton, which will run through to mid-June.

Seven teams, including Bonaly Primary and Bruntsfield Primary, are registered and Pauline McDonald, Edinburgh’s girls’ football development officer and a former Arsenal and Scotland player, is hopeful other teams will join the project.

The emphasis is on futsal, a game that originated in Brazil and is played with a low-bounce ball which encourages passing.

The teams will also take part in a girls’ and women’s football open day at McDiarmid Park in Perth at the end of the season.
