Football coverage of the European Championship on the web

The Euro 2000 football championship, kicking off on June 10, marks the start of a summer of major sporting events. The football competition runs until July 2 and coincides with Wimbledon tennis championship, from June 26 to July 9. Both events will receive comprehensive TV and radio coverage and have already led to endless supplements, so is there anything left for the web to say?

Silly question. There is potential for endless cyber lessons capitalising on pupils’ obsession with these events, not least testing the Internet’s ability to give users access to the latest news and make use of its unrivalled statistical information. Students could begin by testing strategies for finding relevant sites and deciding which to add to their favourites or bookmark foler. Search strategies might include the use of search engines, directories and portal sites (portals are sites that attempt to organise web links into popular categories such as sport, shopping, weather and so on). Other options could be typing in a web address from a published article, trying a source of sports news which you already know and trust, asking others in the class (or the teacher) for recommendations, orguessing the likely web address for both events. My guess of www.euro2000.org was spot on - and www.wimbledon2000.org is still available to register as a domain name for pound;60. Search engines, directories and portals to try: www.google.com www.ask.co.ukwww.altavista.co.uk www.freeserve.net www.lineone.net www.yahoo.co.uk
