I wholeheartedly support Mike Fielding’s comments about recruitment in the teaching profession (TES, April 19), and would like to make these additional points: The May 31 deadline means that teachers, seeking new posts, may be absent for interview during April and May. This is a crucial time for preparing students for examinations. Also, referees may feel under considerable pressure at this time.
Job recruitment in teaching seems such a hurried affair. An advertisement appears and the closing date for applications is two weeks later. This leaves little time to reflect on the post advertised and if it’s a new location, no time to research into house prices etc. What other profession has this kind of pressure?
