Foreign languages are not to be taught in every primary in Wales until the Welsh Assembly sees proof of effective teaching techniques, a conference of language teachers heard this week.

Jane Davidson, minister for education and lifelong learning, told the first annual conference of Cilt Cymru, the organisation to promote foreign languages, that she wants to see hard evidence of which strategies work. A pilot project to introduce languages at key stage 2 in 105 primaries and 22 secondaries across Wales has so far received positive responses from teachers and pupils, officials say.
