THE Scottish Secondary Teachers’ Association adamantly opposes turning marking into a contractual obligation.
“It would be a dreadfully damaging step,” Barbara Clark, the union’s assistant general secretary, said. “The vast majority of markers do the job for their personal and professional deveopment and to inform their work with pupils.
“This has allowed a cohort of very able markers to be built up over the years who can also support inexperienced markers. How that would be managed if marking became yet another contractual duty for all teachers I cannot begin to imagine.”
