Eric Forth, the Tory MP who died last week, was an education minister In the 1990s. Sharp of suit (and of wit), he was asked if he would give the same advice to a teacher managing a class of more than 40 as to the PM John Major, who couldn’t manage his Cabinet of 22. “The list of measures and sanctions available,” was his reply, “includes interruption of lunchtime privileges, detention and carrying out a useful task.”
