Murray: a British or Scottish victory?
That’s it! A British winner.
Soren_Kierkegaard
He’s Scottish and British. Like I’m English and British.
Middlemarch
Will you tell Alex Salmond? Well done, the lad from Dunblane.
grunwald
He’s just described himself as a “British winner”.
Middlemarch
With the media, if you win it’s axiomatic you are British (English, almost). If you lose, you are either Scottish, Irish or Welsh ... George Best and Alex Higgins were also British when things were triumphant. They ended up losing Irishmen.
Soren_Kierkegaard
I couldn’t give a stuff that he’s Scottish. He’s British: we have a British winner and he’s a worthy champion. End of, as far as I’m concerned.

I’m relieved that he’s won. It means all the trendies who became cyclists last year will stop blocking up the roads and go off playing tennis for the next year or so.

Supposing that Murray came from Uxbridge, how would he be described then? As a novelist, educator and humanitarian with three PhDs, one of them on the subject of how Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle proves that atheism is a busted flush? Or as a self-regarding sexual self-sufficient, epitomising the concept of a bottle-job crossed with a lesser-spotted gobshite?
Handel_Parker
Give the bloke credit where credit’s due. Three straight sets against the world number one in sweltering conditions, that’s an achievement by anyone’s standards. Here is a man worthy of being called British rather the ugly and miserable Scottish wanker he would have been described as if he’d lost. He justifiably won the tournament. So fair dos.
