With the media, if you win it’s axiomatic you are British (English, almost). If you lose, you are either Scottish, Irish or Welsh ... George Best and Alex Higgins were also British when things were triumphant. They ended up losing Irishmen.

As a novelist, educator and humanitarian with three PhDs, one of them on the subject of how Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle proves that atheism is a busted flush? Or as a self-regarding sexual self-sufficient, epitomising the concept of a bottle-job crossed with a lesser-spotted gobshite?

Give the bloke credit where credit’s due. Three straight sets against the world number one in sweltering conditions, that’s an achievement by anyone’s standards. Here is a man worthy of being called British rather the ugly and miserable Scottish wanker he would have been described as if he’d lost. He justifiably won the tournament. So fair dos.
