Can we suggest one thing that, in our opinion, would improve our jobs and make teaching “easier”? Mine: better training for managers on managing people and getting the best from their teams.

In our school, asking classroom teachers their views would help. When the school is facing some new challenge the procedure is: 1) announce it at a staff meeting; 2) explain why it arises from some weakness in the teaching staff; 3) describe what some adviser has told the headteacher we must do; 4) set out the monitoring schedule to ensure that this new initiative is implemented properly; 5) er.well, that’s about it.

Restrict class sizes - maybe on a sliding scale (11- to 14-year-olds: 28 by 2015, 26 by 2018, 24 by 2021, etc; and 14- to 16-year-olds down to 20, max).

The Sutton Trust toolkit of 2011 made the point that small reductions in large classes were of little use but that small classes - of less than 20 or 15 - did make a difference.

I would like to teach in the same room throughout the day. I don’t want to be all over the place, because I always forget something and can’t remember where I put it down.

Properly evaluate a teacher’s workload and refocus the time solely on effective teaching. In my opinion, this would involve teaching a lesson then having the next hour to mark, evaluate and set up the next lesson.
