It is snowing as I write and no doubt some schools will have to close for snow somewhere in Britain. Some parents, and most definitely the gutter press, will vilify teachers for taking such action. Why do schools close?

In one hilly town where I used to work, 2cm to 3cm of snow led to the buses that brought in 50 per cent of pupils being withdrawn.

Last week it snowed and central Norwich was gridlocked. “Ordinary people” complained about taking five hours to make the journey (normally 40 minutes). I hope they appreciate how much less time it will take them with more than 300 schools closed.

Practicalities. Boring, boring, boring. When you are 11 snow is fun. Kids should be allowed the day off just to take advantage.

We haven’t closed and I’ve had numerous complaints about forcing children (but really parents) to come out in the cold. Can’t win.

If our local council had gritted the roads I have no doubt that most of the schools would have been able to open. As for snow being fun for kids, mine have just come in complaining bitterly about the cold.

Our school is shut. The buses simply wouldn’t collect the children this morning, knowing they would have to turn around and take them back again in worsening conditions.

Our little school is staying open. Just taken a few Year 6 pupils out to grit the lane as we’re on a bit of a slope.

I have just been out on the lanes in my little car. Piling though the drifts, sending snow fountaining. Smashing fun, a joy ride.
