The invitation received by the National Association of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers was puzzling. Come to our conference on the national education debate, said the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities.

Fine. Except that the note was addressed to Carol Fox, the union’s Scottish official, who left two years ago. Worse still, it stated that the EIS would be “very welcome as an organisation”. Could the authorities be harbouring secret hopes of a super-union - or are they just hopelessly out of touch?
