For 400 years all Gresham professors have given six free public lectures a year at the college in Barnard’s Inn Hall, Holborn, London EC1.

Forthcoming lectures by Gresham professor of geometry, Ian Stewart, include: “Four centuries of logarithms”, January 27, 1pm, about whether computers have made logarithms obsolete; “Turing’s tiger”, April 9, 5.30pm, on what mathematics can tell us about the markings and shapes of animals from algae to zebras; and “Chippendale’s lost geometry”, May 21, 1pm, on geometrical tricks used by furniture makers.

The second lecture will be held at Sarah Bonnell School, Stratford, London E15. Tickets and details: 0171 831 0575.
