Primary pupils are to continue getting subsidised milk as the Government ignores advice that the pound;1.5 million-a-year scheme is a waste of money.

A report earlier this month by consultants London Economics, commissioned by three government departments, found that the rationale for the free milk scheme was weak and that the health benefits were small.

In the 1970s, Margaret Thatcher, then education secretary, scrapped free school milk, inspiring the playground taunt “Thatcher, Thatcher, milk snatcher”.
