Free schools - yes or no? A TES debate

https://www.tes.com/magazine/archive/free-schools-yes-or-no-tes-debate

Arguably the biggest issue that divides the Conservatives and Labour on education this election is “free schools”. Funded by the state, but controlled by parents, teachers or education firms, these schools have been tried in other countries. But will they improve England’s education system or will they only help the pushy?

To debate this issue the TES is holding a debate titled - Free schools - yes or no? on Monday April 19 in Ealing, London.

Speaking in favour of free schools: Toby Young, parent campaigner for a new school and author of How to Lose Friends and Alienate People

Speaking against free schools: Kevin Courtney, National Union of Teachers (NUT) deputy general secretary and supporter of the Anti-Academies Alliance

Chaired by: Michael Shaw, TES Opinion Editor
