Joan Knott has been the lollipop lady at Pyrford primary school near Woking in Surrey for 21 years.

Joan offered to patrol the school crossing for a fortnight in 1979 and is still there, says deputy headteacher Gillian Freeman who nominated her. Joan knows the name of every child who crosses the busy road through Pyrford village and is always cheerful, no matter how bad the weather. She has to put upwith bad driving, even being clipped by cars on occasion. Despite this she loves her job and will be missed by everyone when she retires in July.

Please send the name of your Friday Hero - and why he or she should get a bouquet - to Sarah Bayliss, TES Friday, Admiral House, 66-68 East Smithfield, London E1W 1BX or e-mail sarah.bayliss@tes.co.uk. Flowers kindly supplied by Marks and Spencer
