Sheila Mears has worked as link adviser to the Tyndale Cluster group of primary schools in Gloucestershire for three years Each of the six primaries in the Tyndale cluster has fewer than 100 pupils, so funding is a big issue. Carol Brodie, head of Kingswood primary, says Sheila Mears does “over and above” what she should and has been vital in helping the six bid for extra funding for a variety of initiatives, including special needs. “She’s had relatively recent headship experience and can see that the things we do make a difference to children,” says Carol.

But more than that, Sheila provides much-needed support to ase what Carol describes as “the lonely business of being a head. She is always there at the end of the phone or in person if there’s a crisis or concern. We know that she will give advice and respond quickly. But she’ll also challenge us.” When told that a bouquet was on its way to Gloucestershire LEA headquarters, Carol said: “She absolutely deserves it.”
