Mr Jimmie Dunnett is head janitor at Thurso high school, Caithness - the most northerly school in Britain He hasn’t had a day off sick for 13 years and, according to headteacher John Inkster, he treats the school as he would his own home. He’s due to retire next month but where will they find such a cheerful, hardworking and dedicated replacement? “He’s absolutely indispensable and we’ll only really know that when he’s gone,” says John Inkster, who runs the thriving 960-strong comprehensive set on a blustery 20-acre site.

Deputy head Jim Sutherland thought ofnominating Jimmie Dunnett for our flowers, champagne and chocolates to say thank you for his commitment to the high school and to school rugby throughout the Highlands. Mr Sutherland is saying goodbye too - to become head of Kinlochleven high school, and says: “Jimmie’s the top janny in every way.”
