Terry Cunningham is caretaker at the 264-pupil St Nicholas RC primary school in Gipton, Leeds

Terry, who’s been nominated by his head Paul Lawson, retires next Tuesday after 26 years at St Nicholas - our flowers, champagne and chocolate are due to arrive in time for the pupils’ official farewell. Mr Lawson says Terry has long been “an integral part” of making St Nicholas a very special place. “Gipton was once described on a TV programme as the crime capital of western Europe,” he says. “Yet we do not suffer from vandalism or theft - partly due to the high regard fo Terry within this community.” Mr Lawson says everyone who visits St Nicholas remarks on the “marvellous” condition and cleanliness of the building - “a tribute to Terry’s hard work. Terry has always carried out his duties with a desire and effort to be the best in his field. I think he has achieved it.”
