FSTED’s official complaints adjudicator this week accused ministers of botching an 18-month review of her position, designed to increase its independence from the inspection agency.

Elaine Rassaby, who considers OFSTED’s handling of complaints by schools, told MPs nearly three years ago that she was unhappy to be appointedand employed by OFSTED.

The Department for Education and Employment has now announced that from this summer, it will take charge of appointments to the post. The adjudicator will continue to be employed by OFSTED. Ms Rassaby called the decision “very unsatisfactory”, saying it “smacked of tokenism” by ministers.
