Our production of Much Ado About Nothing at the Globe Theatre was far from “stripped down” (“Alas, poor Yorick, your scene’s been cut”, TES, May 9). It was a full-scale, professional production created to introduce 10,000 young people to the play they were studying at key stage 3. It was not a production of two scenes.
I am against quick-fix, solve-it-for-me approaches to introducing Shakespeare’s plays. I am, however, in favour of working with teachers to provide pupils with practical and playful approaches to plays, both in the classroom and the theatre. These should not be subservient to KS3 and should introduce the play as a whole.
