What price professionalism? A posse of Scots attended a recent two-day forum in Leeds at which there was much academic agonising about professionalism in teaching, staff development, etc, etc. Taking a breather, Magnus Ross of the Scottish School of Further Education and Walter Humes of St Andrew’s College chanced upon the downtown offices of an outfit calling itself Select Education.
Investigation elicited that this was a temps agency for teachers. Like peripatetic secretaries, teachers register for short-term vacancies. Ross and Humes went back to the forum wondering which is the real world.
