Alan Parr examines books and games certain to inspire an interest in maths

GAMES COUNT (Packs One and Two). By Sandra Garner, Pat Gould and Lesley Woodward. Questions Publishing Company and Staffordshire County Council. Tel: 01785-356853. Fax: 01785-356854. pound;9.99 each

These games are designed to encourage nursery and infant children to develop and practise mathematical ideas in a relaxed atmosphere, and to advance their social an linguistic skills as well. Both books have some 20 games and puzzles, each on an A4 board.

The designs are cheap and cheerful; permission is given for the institution to photocopy and perhaps enlarge (and colour) the games. The copying option, and the simplicity of the games, offers the possibility of using them not only in the classroom but at home as well.

Alan Parr is a primary mathematics writer and INSET provider
