Old soldiers rarely fade away, as we have been constantly reminded in these D-Day anniversary times. Of no one is this more true than Bill Gatherer, for whom the word doyen might well have been coined.

The former chief educational adviser in Lothian Region, now a leading light in the Gordon Cook Foundation at the age of 83, was doing the usual rounds last week proselytising its works on values education.

The very young 53-year-old Gordon Jeyes of Stirling Council noted that Gatherer’s conference badge was not big enough to record all his accomplishments.

“Not dead yet” would suffice, Gatherer quipped.
