YOU question whether GCSE is redundant. This should not be the main target because the exam does serve students who leave and does serve a national purpose in relation to further courses, which in this country are relatively specialised whereas on the continent they are not.
At the moment it would appear that it is key stage 3 that is redundant. It has no special function, only a limited use as non-essential internal monitor for GCSE choices and a government check on teachers who are, generally, already checked at GCSE and, often, the GCE stages.
