Microbiology may seem an esoteric subject, but its relevance is universal.

Cold Wars is a study sheet for key stages 2 and 3 which explains what is known of the causes of the common cold. It illustrates a practical activity, using glitter gel to model the way rhinoviruses can spread from hand to hand. Tuberculosis, an eight-page booklet aimed at students of 16 and over, deals with a more dangerous illness. It covers the recent growth of TB in Britain and givers a lucid account of infection, therapy and research. Cold Wars and Tuberculosis are available from the Society for General Microbiology, Marlborough House, Basingstoke Road, Reading RG7 1AG.
