Coasts is a major part of the curriculum across the age range.

Ask pupils to use modelling dough to make landscapes of before, during and after erosion with cliffs, natural arches, wave-cut platforms and so on.

The different points of view explored in the article about how coasts should be managed can be investigated through role-play and debate. Combine classes or conduct the debate in an assembly to add an extra dimension.

JGCSE and A-level students could compare attitudes towards coastal erosion in different parts of the world. A web search for “coastal erosion country” will provide a range of material about MEDCs and LEDCs.

JUse an image-editing program to prepare and label before and after pictures of coastal erosion. For digital images of cliff erosion at Sheringham and Runton visit www.pupilvision.comyeartencoastalimages1.htm

Carry out a web enquiry for a section of coastline. Where is it? What is it like? How and why is it changing? What is or could be done about it? What will it be like in 100 years? What do you think should happen? Visit www.goring-by-sea.comerosion.htm; www.dover.gov.ukcoastcoastal-erosion.asp and www.noaa.govcoasts.html
