Label places mentioned in the article on a map centred on the North Atlantic to develop locational knowledge (PoS 3b) and an understanding of interdependence (PoS 3g).
* Make a link with history units of study such as unit 6c: “Why did the Vikings travel from their homelands and where did they go?”
Use the over-fishing of cod as a resource issue (PoS6k). Ask pupils to investigate its causes; its social, economic and environmental consequences; and why international agreements are so important. Ask pupils to say how they think our seas should be managed.

Investigate the advantages and disadvantages of fish farming as a method of sustainable food production, comparing the experience of more and less economically developed countries.
