Use a school dinner of fish fingers, chips and peas as a stimulus for "where our food comes from" (PoS 3e).

Label places mentioned in the article on a map centred on the North Atlantic to develop locational knowledge (PoS 3b) and an understanding of interdependence (PoS 3g).

* Make a link with history units of study such as unit 6c: "Why did the Vikings travel from their homelands and where did they go?"

Use the over-fishing of cod as a resource issue (PoS6k). Ask pupils to investigate its causes; its social, economic and environmental consequences; and why international agreements are so important. Ask pupils to say how they think our seas should be managed.

* Read "North Sea cod stocks on verge of collapse" on the WWF site (go to search for "cod" and scroll down to the article. Prepare a front-page newspaper article that covers the main points of the story.

Include at least one map, one diagram and one interview (PoS 1f, 2d).

Investigate the advantages and disadvantages of fish farming as a method of sustainable food production, comparing the experience of more and less economically developed countries. Evaluate the information given on a range of websites, for example
