Developing locational knowledge (PoS 3b), use a floor mat of the world and ask children to place a toy turtle in its correct location. With the youngest children this will begin with developing recognition of land and sea, while upper juniors should aim for being able to locate the oceans, and the seas around Europe. KS 2-3

Investigate an environmental issue - our impact on the environment and how we can manage environments sustainably (PoS 6e6j). Get pupils to work in groups to produce a large display about the impact of human activity on turtles. Give a minimum set of criteria to be met, eg at least one map, one labelled picture, one statistical graph or diagram: www.cccturtle.orgspecies.htm and “Threats”, is a good place to start.

KS 4

Use www.euroturtle.org and “Greentrack” to track Esmeralda’s migration.

This will develop a range of map, atlas and ICT skills, including latitude and longitude, in a creative way.

KS 5

Use www.euroturtle.org and “Educational Activities” and “Virtual Field Station” as the basis for a decision-making exercise dealing with conservation issues and the conflicting demands of human activity eg tourism, and the needs of wildlife.
