Butterfly Conservation’s website has fact sheets about more than 40 species of moths and butterflies. Allocate one or two fact sheets to each pair of pupils and ask them to contribute to a class map showing the distribution of their species and to a class display about habitat management.

Read the information at the Natural Resources Conservation Service website.

Design a poster to explain why moths are in serious decline; for background information see news.bbc.co.uk1hiscitech4720864.stm Include a diagram to show the place of moths in food webs.

Carry out a moth survey as a homework activity. For ideas see www.back-garden-moths.co.ukIndex.php

Record the information on a class map. Is there a pattern to the number and types of moths found? What environmental factors might explain the distribution?
