Three lions

Explore the history of the British monarchy with a new online resource about the royal arms, from the Churches Conservation Trust.

What is it?

The site introduces pupils to royal arms on everyday objects such as coins, football shirts and stamps. An interactive timeline explores how royal arms have changed over the centuries. There is also guidance about which churches display coats of arms, together with details about the changing relationship between state and church.

How to use it?

This is a good starting point for a kings and queens project. Pupils can search for royal arms in their local area, in newspapers and even on banknotes. Visit www.visitchurches.org.ukRoyalArms to identify whose arms have been spotted. Is it the rarely seen crest of Richard the Lionheart? Or the emblem of the house of Windsor? This could also be the foundation for a research project on one of the monarchs.
