Soon it will be time to abandon the school run and remember how to walk and smell the flowers. Even tiny children can tag along on Walks Worldwide’s 11-day family trek to experience the wildlife and Alpine flora of Mala Fatra and the High Tatra mountains of Slovakia. It’s up to you if they need carrying sometimes, but walks are tailored to your family’s ability. Flights (from Stansted or East Midlands) departing August 12, transfers, a mountain guide and full-board in the mountains (half-board for a final day in Prague) are included in the price of pound;660 for adults; pound;450 for children of seven to 16; pound;295 for children aged two to six and pound;50 for infants under two. Details: 01524 262 255; www.walksworldwide.com.

No one will be carried on Explore Worldwide’s eight-day Cretan Rambler trip - the minimum age is 14 and you’ll heft your own pack some of the way. Apart from the achievement of descending the Samaria Gorge, hikers will discover secluded villages and isolated Mediterranean beaches that most tourists never see.

Departures on August 3, 17 and 24 cost from pound;549 per person including guide, seven nights’ Bamp;B, return flights from Heathrow and transfers. Details: 01252 760 000; www.exploreworldwide.com.
