It was Bing and Bob who sang “Just like Webster’s dictionary, we’re Morocco-bound”. This Easter there’s an innovative holiday that means the hardiest walkers can set off to the highest peak in north Africa, and still keep the Dorothy Lamour element in the family happy - the hike is preceded by a weekend of shopping and sightseeing in Marrakesh.
Walks Worldwide has devised an itinerary that takes off from London on Good Friday, April 18, for a weekend exploring the bazaars and palaces of the city, and watching the fire-eaters and snake charmers in the Djemma El Fna.
Leaving the weekenders to fly home with the shopping, trekkers transfer to the slopes of Oukaimeden in the High Atlas to begin a three-day walk to the base of Mount Toubkal before climbing the snowy 4,167-metre peak. They fly home with memories of meeting mountain Berbers and views across the Sahara.
The three-night weekend costs pound;595 per person (twin share) including scheduled flights, transfers and half-board accommodation. The nine-night tour costs pound;795, includes accommodation in refuge and gite d’etape, meals on trek, guiding and full porterage of baggage. Details: 01524 262255; www.walksworldwide.com.
