On Monday, primary and secondary teachers of science should ask at school if a big brown envelope has arrived from Rolls-Royce. Today the company is despatching details of an imaginative science competition, with the opportunity to win pound;20,000.

“We are asking teams of adults - teachers and parents - to collaborate on a proposal that addresses a science teaching need in their school or college,” says project manager Emma Medd-Sygrove. “Topics might be the use of information technology, motivating girls, teaching pupils with special needs - almost anything.”

Teams have until February 25 to register their proposals. Three in each age category (3-11, 11-16, 16-19) will go forward with pound;5,000 and a mentor to implement their project. The winners and runners-up in each group will get pound;15,000 and pound;10,000 to spend on science teaching.
