THIS year’s winner of the Baxters Award for home economics is Lynn Smith from Blairgowrie High, who organised a successful Junior Masterchef competition and other events to promote her subject.

The icing on the cake came when pupils were placed in a local bistro, training beside the chef and serving diners.

Mrs Smith, principal teacher for seven years, said: “My reward is to see the pupils’ faces and when they say thanks to me.”

One of the most successful innovations has been the wearing of chefs’

whites. “We all wear chefs’ whites for hospitality exams and special occasions. This creates an image, improves self-esteem and makes a huge difference.”

One of her pupils has appeared on the Beat the Chef competition on ITV, while another won a behind-the-scenes trip to the BBC’s Ready Steady Cook show, meeting celebrity chefs Gary Rhodes and Ainsley Harriot.

Pupils on Access 3 and Intermediate 1 courses have cooked and served a buffet to teachers and visited caterers at RAF Leuchars and Marks and Spencer.
