NORMAN Tebbit famously urged unemployed people to get on their bikes to find work. Now a Tory-controlled council in rural north Yorkshire has gone a step further.

Hambleton Council is taking the former Conservative minister at his word by backing a scheme to lease out mopeds to young job-seekers.

It has put pound;1,500 into the Wheels 2 Work project, an initiative from the Hambleton and Richmondshire Rural Transpot Partnership, with trials to begin this spring. A dozen mopeds will be leased out in areas with no public transport.

Peter Brown, economic and development chairman, said: “Mobility opens up employment and training opportunities regardless of where you live. The project will give youngsters the confidence to look for jobs outside their immediate neighbourhood.”

Lord Tebbit would, no doubt, approve.
