In a bid to encourage more girls to study the declining science, the Institute for Physics has published a guide advising teachers on ways to make physics more female-friendly.
The booklet - Girls in the Physics Classroom: A Teachers’ Guide for Action - builds on a report earlier this year, which concluded that girls saw physics as a masculine subject.
The booklet suggests ways to tempt shy girls to take part in lessons and is accompanied by a DVD featuring Helen Baxendale, who starred in Friends and Cold Feet, as a science teacher demonstrating good and bad practice.
The package was launched at the Association for Science Education conference, and will be sent to IOP-affiliated schools.
