Fear for their personal safety is stopping thousands of girls across the world from attending school, according to Amnesty International. A seven-year survey of 3,000 children in the UK found that more than half had experienced bullying or assault. Half of schoolgirls in Malawi said they had been sexually assaulted by teachers or boys at school, while 83 per cent of girls in America aged 12 to 16 said they had experienced some form of sexual harassment. In Tanzania, 14,000 girls were expelled between 2003 and 2006 for being pregnant.
