There is dangerous flippancy in the statement that part-time work pays for “mobile phones, brand-label clothes and alcohol” (FEFocus, January 24).
The fact is that, for many, a “full-time” course is supported almost exclusively by part-time employment.
I would greatly welcome the protocol referred to but, rather than viewing part-time work as being fundamentally detrimental to study, let us work with employers to achieve balance and also to recognise and accredit this work. The alternative is to drive the issue underground with students reluctant to declare part-time work.
Let us help youngsters achieve the right balance but also applaud their efforts to support themselves.
