To the star-filled Scottish Education Awards lunch where David Cameron, East Lothian’s education head, was sandwiched between Glen of the Glens, the kilted man who promotes Scotch Beef on television, and Colin Murdock, the Hibs and Northern Ireland centre back. Hence the lines of autograph hunters.

Three young hunters appeared from nowhere to demand Cameron’s signature, a set-up by one of his heidies.

“I was not fooled,” the famous Cameron proclaimed.
