New research has recommended General National Vocational Qualifications as a good vehicle for adult education. The study, by the Further Education Development Agency, found that the courses suited the needs of adults wanting to gain a broad vocational qualification.

But researcher Aidan Pettitt found problems with assessment and securing funding for courses.

The research comes after the Kennedy Committee on widening participation in FE found that many of the qualifications currently available were unsuited to adults because the assessment schemes were designed for full-time study.

The FEDA research suggests ways this can be adapted for more flexible use.
