Up to 3,000 newly-qualified maths and science teachers will have the chance to receive an extra pound;1,500 in “golden hello” cash, if they can afford to wait another year for it.

The trainees should have already collected pound;2,500 for doing their training, and under the old scheme are due to receive a furher pound;2,500 within their first year of teaching.

However, they can now swap to the new scheme and instead collect a bonus pound;4,000 if they wait until their second year in class to receive it. But they will have missed out on the pound;6,000 salaries due to this year’s trainees.
