Bathgate golfer Stephen Gallacher unveiled Edinburgh’s junior golf strategy at Silverknowes golf course. The strategy backs up the Scottish Executive’s pledge to give every 9-year-old in the country a chance to play the game by 2009.
Edinburgh is committed to giving the 3,866 9-year-olds in the capital access to an entry-level golf programme. It also aims to retain 1,585 9- to 14-year-olds in a one-year clubgolf programme and establish pathways between schools and the junior sections of golf clubs.
“Not only is golf fun, it promotes good health and demands a high standard of discipline and etiquette, qualities that will be of benefit to their overall development,” says Mr Gallacher, 31, who represented Scotland in the world cup in November and was joint third in the Deutsche Bank Players’
Championship in July.
